Stepping Back before Stepping Out

This week Colleen and I will be somewhere on the West Coast, enjoying some time away with our family and soaking in the bush, the birds, the rain.  It will be a chance to re-energise and refresh. It’s been a long run the last 15 months – lots of ups and downs, challenges and opportunities. But always a sense that God is doing a new thing both in us as a couple, as a family, and in this church family we are privileged to journey with.

On Sunday, we outlined the direction our church will take over the next five years – our Great Journey has begun.   We are extremely excited about where this journey will take us, and I got the sense on Sunday that many of you are too.

Our vision is to see a vibrant, growing family of faith participating with Christ to transform lives and communities.

The word vibrant was selected deliberately: aliveness, bubbling with life, forward moving, active and effective with the power, light and love of Christ in us. This is both what we want to see throughout Christchurch, but also what we want to see in our own family of faith.  Bubbling faith that doesn’t sit still.

Ephesians 3:20-21 says, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power (dunamis) that is at work within us, to him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen”

The word power here is the Greek word dunamis, from which we get our words dynamic, dynamite, dynamo.  It shouts vibrancy.  But vibrancy needs an energy source: the dunamis of God.

And that’s what I am going to reflect on as I rest.
