As we journey through Mark, we can see Jesus being very intentional about what he says, how he says it, and who he says it to. Sometimes, we fall short of imitating Jesus in this part of our lives!
Sometimes we can think we are speaking truth (and perhaps it is!) and yet still harm others because the way we say it can ruin the intent, or we say it to the wrong person, or at the wrong time. We sometimes focus on the negative and what is wrong about someone and set about telling them, or by speaking out against a group of people.
But who ever really responds favourably to being spoken to in that way?
In my experience people respond far better to an alternative vision, or a better way. Because it demonstrates love and care for the person as well as a concern for the effects of their actions. Jesus did this. He challenged those in the family of faith who should know better. He gently invited those considered the worst of sinners to join him in creating a new Kingdom of peace, forgiveness, and love.
Here are some simple tips to help us imitate Christ better.
Think about what you say. Is this actual truth or is it just my opinion? And if it is true, does it need to be said? If in doubt, stay quiet, or ask someone mature for objective advice.
Think about how you say it. Am I focusing on the negative or offering a vision for a better way? Am I creating fear, or offering hope? Am I building bridges or creating barriers? Opening doors for relationship or locking them?
Let’s be more like Jesus as we interact with people of all kinds this week!
