I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
Anna shared this during our staff devotions last week and I have been pondering on it since. Of course, it might be because as you are reading this Adam and I will be somewhere in the Lewis Pass area on a three-night tramp and I am desperately hoping that my feet won’t slip, but whatever the reason God has been speaking to me through it.
The comment that He will not let your foot slip assumes action. It assumes that we are not standing still, waiting for God to act in our inaction, but that we are active, pursuing a course, taking steps in faith. This to me speaks of how we are invited into participating with Jesus in the work He is actively doing in the world. It speaks to me of how there are no silent partners in a covenant, each member has an active role in fulfilling the obligations, to keep moving. And it speaks to me of how the Holy Spirit is actively working in us and through us to transform us and the world, bringing about His kingdom - but also that we too are called to work with the Spirit, our free will not taken away.
Isn’t it awesome to know that no matter how young or old, or somewhere in between we are, God invites us into actively put our hands to work with Him as He is busy in the world. As we focus on Jesus, we move forward in faith, having confidence in our God who does not slumber.
