Recognising Jesus

recognising jesus
28 May 2026

On Sunday, we ended our series on Recognizing Jesus with Ross preaching on the disciples on the road to Emmaus. As I was praying that morning in preparation to lead sung worship, I was looking for a scripture to share, but instead I reflected on the whole series and my journey of recognition (and re-recognition), and from that came a poem which I shared in the service. I was asked to put it in the Paper Plane this week. So here it is:

Recognising Jesus
Sometimes I walk the path of life,
And yet fail to see Jesus.
I speak of him, a lot, that’s true. I speak of how he saves us.
I walk through life and think I know,
    What he would do, where he would go;
Who he’d speak to, who he’d show
the path of life.
And yet sometimes I get it wrong you know.

Yet walk with me, he always does,
Whether I see him there or not.
And sometimes I invite him in!
To my world, my life, my lot.
And when I do, my eyes are opened,
I see him as he is:
Gentle, kind and scarred for me.
The one who’s there and will always be.
Who’s given his life, and all for free!
If only I could truly see,
what it means to be loved by Jesus.

He walks with us so patiently,
Whether we see him there or not.
He teaches, guides and lifts our eyes,
So that we might see him, recognise,
That he is right there, the faithful son,
Raised from the dead, the risen one.
The one who brings to us new life,
And frees us from the pain and strife,
Who cuts much deeper than any knife,
And helps us walk the path of life,
    Right there next to Jesus.

Jesus walks alongside you now,
    Regardless of your feelings.
He’s journeying beside you,
    Whether you’re running, walking, kneeling.
You may not be able to see him,
But know that he is there,
He’s holding out his hands to you,
    Holding bread to share.
Waiting for your eyes to see.
Waiting, waiting, patiently.
To lift you up from bended knee.
To dance with you with joyful glee.
So that you can recognise him and be,
Walking life with Jesus.

Revelation 3:20 says
“I am here! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone here’s my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”

The invitation is open to all – it’s not about having all the answers, it’s about being willing to have the conversation and start the journey of discovery – with Jesus as your guide within his family of fellow journeyers!
