What's the point?

A few weeks ago I mentioned in a sermon that society has moved on from the hard line ‘new atheist’ belief evident in conversations during the early part of the century that there is no God and therefore no greater purpose.

Balancing the emerging rejection of that premise, there is now an emerging recognition that there is something ‘other’ and conversations are increasingly turning to what that ‘other’ might be and what it might mean. What’s the point? What am I meant to do? Does my life have any meaning? These are questions that I am being frequently asked now.

As the Spirit is stirring up deep questions of mission and meaning within society, it in turn leaves a lot of the people we live with, work with, play with and just do life with in general, struggling with an understanding of their purpose and hope for a future with meaning. As they ask us how we find the answers to these questions, we ourselves need to understand our own purpose in order to give them an answer!

Our next series will reflect on just that: What is our purpose and therefore our mission as God’s people?

But to know that, we first need to know the story we have been woven into, God’s story, and the mission that we have been both woven into and commissioned to do. When we are sure of who we are in God’s sight and what we’ve been sent out into the world to do it’s a lot easier to be the people of hope, and to show what Kingdom living is like as we reflect the glory of the King into a world dying to be introduced to him.
